Keeping spare filters on hand helps maintenance teams replace fume extractor filters when needed. But during the rainy season, in long-distance transit, or in warehouses with large temperature swings, moisture can reach a filter even if its carton has never been opened. When inspecting a shipment, check whether the inner bag is still sealed and look for signs of water ingress or condensation.
| Filter type | Primary function | What to check after moisture exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Glass-fiber HEPA | Captures airborne particles in a fine glass-fiber medium | Liquid water can increase airflow resistance. Inspect the pleats, frame, and seals for damage. |
| Modified activated carbon | Adsorbs selected gaseous pollutants, depending on the carbon formulation | Moisture can change adsorption capacity. The effect depends on the carbon, its treatment, and the target gas. |
A glass-fiber HEPA filter consists of pleated filter media, a frame, and seals. When a cold filter is moved into warm, humid air, water can condense on its surfaces. If liquid water enters the pores of the filter media, it can increase airflow resistance. Set the filter aside for inspection if you find water marks, distorted pleats, or damage to the frame or seals. If warehouse records show high humidity, check the condition of the packaging and look for evidence of direct wetting before deciding whether to install the filter.
Activated carbon contains a network of microscopic pores. Water vapor can compete with some volatile organic compounds (VOCs) for adsorption sites, reducing the filter’s working capacity for those compounds. Some modified carbons are impregnated with compounds that react with specific gases. In ammonia adsorption tests, for example, the effect of humidity varied with the base carbon and the impregnation chemistry. Appearance and odor alone cannot reliably indicate how much adsorption capacity remains, so keep spare carbon filters in their original sealed packaging until installation.
| What you find | What to do |
|---|---|
| Damp outer carton, intact inner seal, and no visible droplets inside the bag | Photograph and document the condition. Recheck the packaging in a dry area and inspect the filter before installation. Contact the supplier first if the carton was soaked or the extent of exposure is unclear. |
| Torn inner bag, broken seal, or droplets inside the bag | Identify and isolate the affected lot. Hold it back from installation and send the supplier photos and details of the storage conditions. |
| Water marks or deformation in the HEPA media, or unusual clumping in the carbon media | Keep the filter out of service and ask the supplier about replacement. Avoid drying it with heat, direct sunlight, or compressed air before installation. |
Need replacement filters for your KNOKOO fume extractor? Send us your equipment model, a photo of the filter label or the current filter lot number, and a brief description of your storage conditions.
